November Demonstrator – Tones Briggs

Tones Briggs Christmas Ornaments
Turning since 1991 and have explored hollow forms, bowls, boxes as well as my favorite which is Christmas Ornaments. I will place emphasis on “finials” which can also potentially enhance some of your work.

I use a system introduced to me by Dan Ackerman which allows for do multiples without compromising the use of your lathe for other turning.

Looking forward to sharing the evening with all of you.Tones

September Meeting – Mini Symposium

This month we are having our second 2017 Mini Symposium. These events are special in that they offer the opportunity to ob-serve several different aspects of turning and decoration at one event. They are also special in that the demonstrations are per-formed by our own members. This club is very proud to have members of all skill levels. We can all learn something new and woodturners are, in large, well known for their willingness to share their secrets with all.

Demonstrators so far are:

  • Roy Lane – hollow form
  • AlisaBeth Nash – Christmas ornament or pens
  • Jeff Marshall
  • David Best – power carving tools

There will be no Show and Tell this month but feel free to bring your projects for display.

August Demonstrator – John Howard

Like so many of us, John Howard had a decades long break between being introduced to woodturning in high school wood shop classes and taking it up again. In the interim, he completed a Biology degree, served 5-years in the Army, and had a long career as a teacher dean of instruction, first at Portland Community College and then at Bates Technical College in Tacoma.

John returned to wood turning shortly before he retired from Bates in 2012. He joined the South Puget Sound Woodturners in 2014, and since then joined the SPSW board and often acts as a mentor at monthly sawdust sessions.

At the SPSW’s August meeting, John will demonstrate how to make a segmented pen, which is a relatively simple project, that is a good introduction to more complex segmented turning projects. Also highlighted during this demonstration will be using a skew chisel to minimize tear out and use of cyanoacrylate (super glue) as a finish.
