April Demonstrator – Michael Poirier

Michael will be demonstrating how to combine a bit of segmented turning with turning a coffee mug from rings instead of the tradition staves as shown in the cup instructions. It will be a start to almost finished cup with the use of swap outs as the project progresses to minimize actual turning time or having to wait for glue to dry.

Michael first started building toys and furniture for the family where some of those projects required turned parts, so a lathe be-came a necessity. That was his introduction to turning and about 3 years ago he joined the SPSW to see what he could learn and how to could improve. With the help and encourage from a few of its members he feels comfortable enough to give his first demonstration.

What’s Happening at Other Chapters

The Northwest Woodturners in Beaverton, Oregon will be meeting on April 6th. Tom Willing will be demonstrating turning eggs.

The Inland Northwest Woodturners in Spokane Valley are meeting on April 6th. Internationally known turner Stuart Batty will be demonstrating for the entire 2 hours.

The Southwest Idaho Woodturners Association in Boise, ID. will be meeting on April 11th. The program for the evening has not been announced.

The Seattle Woodturners are meeting on April 13th. This meeting will feature a tool sale and Founders panel.

The Willamette Valley Woodturners in Salem, Oregon will be meeting on April 13th. Steve Newberry will be demonstrating an earing stand.

The Fraser Valley Woodturners Guild in Abbotsford, B.C., will be meeting on April 13th. The program for the evening has not been announced.

The Northwest Washington Woodturners in Mt. Vernon will be meeting on April 20th. The program for the evening has not been announced, but will be held in Burlington rather than Hillcrest Lodge.

The Cascade Woodturners in Portland, OR, will be meeting on April 20th. Lane Phillips will demonstrate turning an “upside down” natural edge bowl.

The Olympic Peninsula Woodturners will be meeting on April 26th. Larry Lemon will demonstrate Lichtenberg Figures.

The Island Woodturners Guild on Vancouver Island is holding their next meeting on April 22nd. Dale Larson will present a full-day demonstration.

The Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild in Vancouver, B.C. will be meeting on April 26th. Allan Cusworth will demonstrate turning a multi-center goblet. Prior to that, on April 22nd Keith Gotschall will hold an all-day demo followed on the 23rd with an all-day class.

The Southwest Washington Woodturners will be meeting on April 27th. The program for the evening has not been announced.

The Woodturners of Olympia will be meeting on April 27th. The program for the evening has not been announced.

The Beaver State Woodturners in Beaverton Oregon will be meeting on April 27th. Reed Gray will be discussing safety and avoiding catches.

The Strait Turners in Sequim, WA are meeting on April 25th at the Gardiner Community Center. Helga Winter will be demonstrating embellishing.

March Meeting – Mini-Symposium

This month we are having our first 2017 Mini Symposium. These events are special in that they offer the opportunity to observe several different aspects of turning and decoration at one event. They are also special in that the demonstrations are performed by our own members. This club is very proud to have members of all skill levels. We can all learn something new and woodturners are, in large, well known for their willingness to share their secrets with all.

February Demonstrator – Carl Jacobson

Carl started woodworking with his grandfather as a young boy. He continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of his fondest memories are working with his grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.

Carl will be turning a three piece lidded box decorated with Lichtenberg figures*.

NW Woodturners Turning Event

Northwest Washington Woodturners invites you to join us at our event “A Day with Trent Bosch ” on March 25, 2017. Early registration special ends January 31 for the 8th annual All Day Demo in Anacortes, WA on March 25th, this year featuring Trent Bosch.

Trent hails from Colorado and has been a professional wood turner and artist for more than 20 years. His work covers a wide spectrum of techniques both on and off the lathe. Trent is an excellent instructor and the day will be packed full of ideas and techniques you can take home and explore in your own shop.
