March Meeting – Mini-Symposium

This month we are having our first 2017 Mini Symposium. These events are special in that they offer the opportunity to observe several different aspects of turning and decoration at one event. They are also special in that the demonstrations are performed by our own members. This club is very proud to have members of all skill levels. We can all learn something new and woodturners are, in large, well known for their willingness to share their secrets with all.

February Demonstrator – Carl Jacobson

Carl started woodworking with his grandfather as a young boy. He continued woodworking through high school, and started woodturning after seeing a turned project in a friends shop. Some of his fondest memories are working with his grandfather in his wood shop. Being able to share our passion for woodworking, ties it all together.

Carl will be turning a three piece lidded box decorated with Lichtenberg figures*.

*Lichtenberg figures, or “Lichtenberg dust figures”, are branching electric discharges that sometimes appear on the surface or in the interior of insulating materials.

NW Woodturners Turning Event

Northwest Washington Woodturners invites you to join us at our event “A Day with Trent Bosch ” on March 25, 2017. Early registration special ends January 31 for the 8th annual All Day Demo in Anacortes, WA on March 25th, this year featuring Trent Bosch.

Trent hails from Colorado and has been a professional wood turner and artist for more than 20 years. His work covers a wide spectrum of techniques both on and off the lathe. Trent is an excellent instructor and the day will be packed full of ideas and techniques you can take home and explore in your own shop. January Demonstrator – Jay Shepard

When you are a starving artist, and don’t care for the starving part, what do you do? Get a job. So, while continuing to pursue his passion for creating art, Jay worked for the Washington State Department of Ecology – focusing on another one of his passions, the environment. At Ecology, he participated in the creation of award-winning waste-reduction and recycling programs that are now implemented throughout the state.

Formally trained in art, Jay graduated with distinction with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Central Washington State College and earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University. When Jay was studying for his master’s, he emphasized painting and drawing. He also studied museum science and has a strong art history background. In time, he developed his wood working skills.

Initially, his focus was on hand-crafting wood furniture. That has evolved into creating art pieces with wood as his medium. He now concentrates almost exclusively on wood turning. Currently, Jay serves on the board of directors of the Woodturners of Olympia chapter of the American Association of Woodturners. Having worked in the environmental field, and having an appreciation for the environment and the natural resources it provides us, and being an advocate for waste reduction, has lead him to seek out and use locally grown wood that, for the most part, is considered urban salvage that most often goes to firewood. He also uses manufacturing wood scrap and rejected material that would otherwise be disposed. There is a lot of beautiful, usable wood available from these sources. He will occasionally, and only sparingly, use some imported woods for accents. Any burl wood he uses is purchased or acquired from reputable sources. Today he will be demonstrating the use of water-based paints and lacquers to embellish turnings.

Jay uses only water-based paints and lacquers on his work. Shellac cut with denatured alcohol is used as a sealer. When using oil finishes, he prefers linseed oil and turpentine (wood spirits). Petroleum based solvents are avoided.

What’s Happening at Other Chapters

The Northwest Woodturners in Beaverton, Oregon will be meeting on January 5th when they will be holding their annual tool swap meet.

The Inland Northwest Woodturners in Spokane Valley are meeting on January 5th. Doug Schroeder will be demonstrating pen turning.

The Southwest Idaho Woodturners Association in Boise, ID. will be meeting on January 10th. The program for the evening has not been announced. Also, the Christmas party has been rescheduled to January 11th.

The Seattle Woodturners are meeting on January 12th. Members of the Olympic Peninsula Woodturners will present “Fifty Nifty Shop Tips”. SPSW members may remember this presentation at our April, 2015 meeting.

The Willamette Valley Woodturners in Salem, Oregon will be meeting on January 12th. Nick Stagg will be demonstrating Lidded Boxes.

The Fraser Valley Woodturners Guild in Abbotsford, B.C., will be meeting on January 12th. The program for the evening has not been announced.

The Mid Columbia Woodturners will be meeting on January 14th. The program for the day has not been announced.

The Northwest Washington Woodturners in Mt. Vernon will be meeting on January 19th. The program for the evening has not been announced.

The Cascade Woodturners Association in Portland, OR, will be meeting on January 19th. CWA member Russ Coker, recently published in the American Woodturner, will be the demonstrator.

The Olympic Peninsula Woodturners will be meeting on January 25th. Larry Miller will be demonstrating Long-stemmed Goblets.

The Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild in Vancouver, B.C. will be meeting on January 25th. Brad Stave will be presenting on “Wonky Bowls”. His presentation will include turning madrone/arbutus, distorting and painting.

The Southwest Washington Woodturners will be meeting on January 26th. The program for the evening has not been announced.

The Woodturners of Olympia will be meeting on January 26th. The program for the evening has not been announced.

The Island Woodturners Guild on Vancouver Island is holding their next meeting on January 28th. Neil Bosdet will be talking about “Marketing Your Work”.

And a new Washington State chapter of the AAW, the Strait Turners in Sequim, WA are meeting on January 31st at the Gardiner Community Center. Dan Ackerman will be demonstrating how to turn a lidded bowl and will also give some sharpening tips.
