AAW Benefits

Mention the AAW and many will wholeheartedly agree that receiving American Woodturner is the primary benefit. But how many are aware of the full complement of benefits and services that come with a membership in the AAW? Just a partial listing illustrates the breadth of features, including the opportunity to apply for an Educational Opportunity Grant (up to $1,000 for individuals, and $1,500 for our local chapters and other organizations); receiving $1M in liability insurance while you are participating in official activities endorsed by the AAW and when participating in official local chapter business; online access to the entire portfolio, over 26 years, of American Woodturner and other educational materials; the ability to list your work for sale on the AAW website; and members-only access to the educational programming at our national symposiums, among many more benefits.

We deeply appreciate the efforts of our members to encourage other turners to join the AAW, and we hope that you will continue that support by referring others to our website for membership information.

What’s Happening at Other Chapters

The Northwest Woodturners in Beaverton, Oregon will be meeting on October 5th at the former Hollywood video store at the mall. The meeting will feature Steve Newberry demonstrating off-center turning.

The Southwest Idaho Woodturners are moving their October meeting to the 8th to accommodate a presentation of new Sorby turning products. The SWIWTA are also holding a 3-day woodturning class with Kirk DeHeer on October 19, 20 & 21. Check the SWIWTA website for more info.

The Seattle Woodturners next meeting is on October 11th. John Hampton will be demonstrating scoops and ladles.

The Fraser Valley Woodturners Guild in Abbotsford, B.C. are holding their next meeting on October 11th.

The Willamette Valley Woodturners in Salem, Oregon will be meeting October 11th with a demonstration by well known turner Stuart Batty. This demo will be held at Nick Stagg’s workshop in Independence.

The Northwest Washington Woodturners are meeting on October 18th and will have a demonstration by SPSW’s Eric Lofstrom on skews and forms. Eric will also be conducting classes on Friday on “Making the cuts”, and Saturday on sharpening techniques.

The Cascade Woodturners next meeting will be October 18th at the Franklin High School wood shop. At this meeting they will be holding their annual wood and art auction.

The Greater Vancouver Woodturners Guild in Vancouver, B.C. will hold their next meeting on October 24th. The GVWG are also sponsoring an all-day demo on the 27th and an all day class on the 28th with Merryll Saylan.

The Beaver State Woodturners in Eugene, Oregon will be meeting October 25th and will have a demonstration by Rudy Rudolph.

The Woodturners of Olympia are holding their next meeting on October 25th when David Charles will be demonstrating how to turn small ladles. BTW, the Woodturners of Olympia have redone their website. Stop by and take a look at the update.

The Island Woodturners Guild on Vancouver Island will be meeting on October 27th. The program will feature a demonstration on turning finials by Cindy Drozda.

The Olympic Peninsula Woodturners are meeting on October 31st with a spooky demonstration by Scott Overby.

September Membership Meeting

Tones BriggsThis is the meeting you have been waiting for. Tones will join us to demonstrate the art of turning Christmas Ornaments. Most of you have probably seen examples of Tones’ Christmas Ornaments, the fine details, the exquisite finials. Tones is truly an artist. He will share with us some of the secrets he has learned over years of turning ornaments. And while Tones is an accomplished turner of bowls, boxes, platters, and hollow forms, you would be amazed if you could see the quantites of Christmas Ornaments he has turned. You would be amazed that he actually has time for any other types of turnings.

Show up early, this should be a very well attended event.

Washington Penturners 2013 Meeting Dates

International Association of PenturnersThe Washington chapter of the International Association of Penturners has posted their meeting dates through 2013. The chapter meets at the Woodcraft store in Seattle. Jeff Marsden, SPSW member, has organized the local chapter and makes this post in the IAP website:

The only time available for this year is October Sun., 10/21 9am – Noon.
Let me know if this works. We could start the meeting around 10 or 10:30.

For next year we have better scheduling.

Sun., 6/9, 1 – 3 pm

New Woodturning Contest

There is a woodturning contest that started August 18th that you may not be aware of.

The Patriot Woodworker announced its first annual woodturning contest in partnership with Woodcraft’s National Turn for Troops Event and Easy Wood Tools. The contest runs through October 1st and entries are made via photo by email. 1st place will win a special Patriot set of Easy Wood Tools.

Any type of turning is eligible: pens, bowls, vessels, hats, etc. There are prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places and a People’s Choice award. Once the top three finalists are determined, they will be asked to ship their turning to the Patriot Woodworker for final judging. Also, the pieces will not be returned, but will be auctioned with all proceeds donated to Homes For Our Troops.
