Segmented Turners December Summary

Talking Loud with Wood
Talking Loud with Wood by Tom Lohman
The Segmented Woodturners virtual chapter of the AAW has released the December Club Summary. Here are some of the goings on:

Segmenting Symposium

Planning is well under way for the next Segmented Turning Symposium next October. If you have any interest in segmented turning you owe it to yourself to at least check out the symposium flyer. There is an amazing lineup of demonstrators and activities.

There have been several good discussions in the forum. Here is a sample:

  • How to make those little wedges between segments of a ring – This thread tried to answer the question on how to have triangular wedges between segments. Several ideas were tossed about and may lead you to a solution that you’re willing to adopt.
  • portholes
    Portholes by Malcolm Tibbetts
  • Plans for clamping rings together – Several clamping concepts were explored in this clamping thread. Discussed were segment clamps, ring clamps and vessel clamps. Discussed were segment clamps, ring clamps and vessel clamps.
  • Wood Expansion Calculator – Member Bill Wyko shared with us a wood expansion calculator which might help you to understand the nature of two pieces of wood that you might be gluing next to each other. You can find this calculator at: http://www.woodworkerssource.com/movement.php
  • Red Oak – The question was raised, “Is red oak good for practicing segmented turning”. The general opinion is “no” but there were so good suggestions made in this thread.
  • Simple Photo Technique – Member David Grady added to this older thread, showing a new light diffuser that he built using easy to find materials. It’s so simple that you’re going to want to make your own!
  • Steady Rests – This thread always seems to be an active one. There are lots of good steady rest ideas here for you!

Thank Our Sponsors

Please make sure that you thank all of our business members for their support of the AAW. These companies and individuals help make the organization great and offer many special benefits to our members. Let them know you appreciate them when you do business with them. We also thank those donors to the monthly and year-end grand prize drawings. You can find a complete listing of those on the website.

Grants

The EOG applications for this year’s grants are now open online. The deadline is January 15. You must apply online. New this year with the EOG grants 10, AAW symposium registrations will be awarded.

Update officers, for annual insurance certificate

Most chapters have their elections around this time of the year. Please make sure to inform the St. Paul office of your latest chapter officers. Also needed is any mailing address change for your annual insurance certificate mailing.

Membership Drive

Don’t forget to check for the latest information on our membership drive program. There are great incentives for bringing in new members or encouraging past members to rejoin.

AAW is excited to kick off our membership drive. As we continue to grow, we look forward to welcoming new members and renewing friendships with returning members. This year we look forward to expanding our programs and implementing new ideas, and as always, sharing with you, this amazing time. Our membership drive is designed to work through and in support of the local chapters. For each 10 memberships (new or lapsed two years or more) the chapter will receive a complimentary symposium registration. The start date for the promotion was November 1st with an end date of December 31st.

Click here to participate in the offer. We hope that you’ll choose to join and spread the word to your friends.

Woodturning Fundamentals

In a continuing effort to reach all of our membership with skills-related information, we have begun a “woodturning fundamentals” program. This educational effort will provide a wide variety of wood and turning fundamental information. Based via e-mail and our website, it is intended to supplement the journal and will be published in months when the journal is not published. Please follow the included link for more information.

Donations for insurance fund

We often get inquiries from the chapters regarding contributing to the insurance fund. We appreciate any donations made to help offset this expense and we accept donations in any amount. A commonly used guideline is $1 per member.

Safety committee announcement

While the AAW has a long-standing commitment to safety, we are always striving to improve. We have created a committee whose whole purpose is to bring safety information and best practices to the forefront. This group, headed by Don Derry, will create, seek out, and publicize information on safety through our best practices area. Individuals and chapters are encouraged to submit materials and ideas.

Safe and Joyous Holiday Season,

What’s New on the SPSW Website

Several pages have been added recently.

If you were able to attend the November membership meeting you saw a very interesting presentation on gold and silver inlay given by John Shrader. Photos from John’s demonstration have now been added in our galleries.

If you like to know what your SPSW Board has been up to, the minutes from the September and November meetings have been added to the member’s section.

In case you missed it, the December newsletter is also available.

AAW Board Message

[note]The following is a message from AAW Director Cindy Bowden[/note]

Season’s Greetings

December is a time to reflect on our accomplishments and the people who help us achieve them.

Our membership values optimism and sharing and believes that education, in whatever format, is valuable. Attending several of the regional symposia has been fun. I enjoy talking with you about your ideas for the future, what you like, and even what you do not like. These conversations have resulted in changes and plans for the future.

One major change was adding new modes of communication with you, our members. The e-newsletters have proven to be a big hit. People are starting to send photographs of successful EOG projects, workshops for kids, and new woodturning projects. We always appreciate seeing what you and your chapter have recently accomplished, and are interested in any calls for exhibition entries, woodturning exhibition locations and dates, and regional symposia.

The staff and volunteers of AAW are hard working, creative, and full of energy. When you call the AAW office you will likely be talking with Jane Charbonneau. Jane helps all of us keep track of our membership, helps you figure out how to place an order for the new smock, and knows just about all of our members. She has never met a stranger.

Betty Scarpino is the editor of the American Woodturner Journal, which you receive 6 times a year in your mailbox or on your computer. Betty is a talented artist and an editor par excellence. She is always happy to talk with you about new ideas for articles.

Linda Ferber handles memberships and chapters. She is the driving force behind our new
Woodturning Fundamentals Program, which addresses skill building for woodturners. You can register on line at the home page, woodturner.org, for this fun free option. Over 600 of you have already signed up.

Greta Tacke works with marketing and public relations. She is the editor of your e-newsletter and sends out all of our press releases about woodturning. Many of you have met her at several of the regional symposia.

Tib Shaw is the Curator of the Gallery of Wood Art. Tib designs and creates all of the wonderful exhibitions in the Landmark Center along with several exhibitions at the International Symposium. She is your resource for all of your questions about wood art.

Pippi Fentress is our special projects person. Pippi has worked on everything from marketing to projects for the symposium to educating children about woodturning. She is working on ways to interest our younger generations to turn wood.

Todd Hartley is keeping our website up to date. When you have questions about why or how this works on the website, Todd is your go-to guy.

September Hoeler works with us on advertising. Even though September is in South Carolina, she has talked to our vendors all over the world. If you want to place an ad in our Journal, e-newsletter, or website, just send her an email at: September@woodturner.org. She is always pleased to help you.

We all wish you a very Happy Holiday and look forward to working with you next year. I hope to see many of you in San Jose, California, for the next Symposium. Please let us know if we can help you in any way. After all, we are here for you.

Cindy Bowden

Director, AAW

December Chapter Business

SPSW members, at the membership meeting this Thursday we will have a couple items of business to take care of.

First, we have to have elections. Here is a list of the positions on which we will be voting. The person in
parenthesis is the current candidate for that position. We will open the floor for additional candidates. All candidates will be welcome. Candidates must be a member of SPSW in good standing and be a member of AAW.

President (Dan Stromstad), Vice President (Eric Lofstrom), Secretary (Tim Ramsaur), Treasurer (Les Johnson), Dir. Of Membership (Jarred Hoffpauir), Dir. Of Communication (Bill Wood), Dir. Of Inventory Control (Steve Solatka), At Large (Jim Cotter), At Large (Keith Palmer), At Large (Jack Wayne), At Large (Andy Firpo).

The second item is to seek approval of a revision to the SPSW By-Laws. This is required so that we can fulfill the requirements of becoming a 501(c)(3) organization. A copy of the proposed by-laws was sent to members and can also be found here http://www.spswoodturners.org/for-members/draft-by-laws-12-12-2011
