Past SPSW President to be Artist in Residence

Stephen HatcherAccording to an article in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, Stephen Hatcher, past president of the SPSW, and a regular demonstrator at SPSW meetings, has been selected by the National Park Service to be an Artist in Residence at Denali National Park and Preserve for the 2013 season. Two visual artists and one writer were selected from approximately 250 applicants.

The artist-in-residence program is a national program that enables established artists to live in a park while they create park-related art. This is the 12th year of the artist-in-residence program at Denali National Park and Preserve. A total of 41 artists and writers, including 26 from Alaska, have participated in previous summers.

Each artist will offer a public presentation for visitors during their residency. They will each donate a work inspired by their time in Denali to the park’s collection. Pieces created by artists-in-residence from previous years will be on display in the Denali Visitor Center, Eielson Visitor Center and the Murie Science and Learning Center during the 2013 visitor season.

If you are a visual artist or writer and are interested in applying for the 2014 season you are encouraged to visit the park’s website for information and to apply. The call opens on May 1, 2013.

Non Profit Status

approvedWe have received notification from the Internal Revenue Service that our application for status as a section 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization has been approved! That means that donations to the SPSW are now tax deductible to the maximum extent allowed by law. We believe this will open up new opportunities to extend our educational programs.

This is a result of hard work by dedicated members of our chapter. President Dan Stromstad kicked off and coordinated the effort, including completing the application and communication with the IRS, through its completion. Board member Andy Firpo did an extensive review and proposed rewrites of our By Laws so that they complied with the non profit status requirements. Our chapter approved the new By Laws at last December’s membership meeting. Treasurer Les Johnson spent considerable time gathering the required financial documents that had to be submitted to demonstrate the educational nature of our chapter’s efforts. Also thanks to Olympia chapter president Larry Miller for his support and advice through the process.
