November Demonstrator

SPSW member Jimmie Allen will be our November demonstrator. Since he first joined the Olympic Peninsula woodturners in 2003, Jimmie focused on the challenges that lidded boxes present. He worked for many years to improve techniques, wood selection, shapes, proportions and designs, which he will share with us on the 18th. Jimmie took over D-Way Tools after Dave Schweitzer retired, and many of our members have purchased highly regarded tools from both Box-Master and D-Way. Jimmie will have an assortment of Box Master and D-Way tools available for cash sales at the meeting.

So please join us November 18th! The Fife Center and the Zoom meeting will open about 6:30. Meeting announcements, board elections, and show and tell will start at 6:45, and the demo will start at 7:00 PM

Paul Crabtree

peoples choiceMany long time SPSW members will remember Paul Crabtree as an active member of our chapter. We have been notified of Paul’s passing in late August. Paul had been residing in Tennessee at the time. Paul’s family is conducting a memorial service at the Tahoma Memorial Cemetery on November 8th at 10:30 AM. SPSW members are welcome to attend.

October Demonstrator

We will have another hybrid meeting on October 21st at 7:00PM. That means you have a choice of attending either the physical meeting at the Fife Community Center or you can log into the Zoom Meeting and view the meeting and demo from home.

We have an exciting program for you this month! Just in time for the holidays, this month’s presenter will be Cindy Drozda, and she will be demonstrating how to use sea urchin shells to make holiday ornaments and decorations. In addition to shell prep, finial design and turning, and ornament assembly, Cindy will also demonstrate how to use metallic foils to gild the shell.

Cindy is nationally known as one of the best demonstrators out there! She was a pioneer in offering these Zoom-based demos for woodturners! The Woodturners of Olympia (WOO) will be joining us for this demonstration and sharing costs with us.

We are working to tweak these hybrid meetings to make them run more smoothly. This will only be our 3rd meeting using this format, and we’re getting better with each one. IT Director Ramon Lyn is working hard to perfect hybrid meeting delivery using new equipment that we have acquired for that purpose. Even with the challenges we have encountered getting everything to work together, from what we hear, it seems like we are doing as well as anyone in the country right now. This month, Ramon hopes to be able to better broadcast meeting announcements for people viewing remotely and improve color on the Fife Center’s screen for the in-person attendees. Additionally, we are also trying to make any announcements and do a limited show-and-tell starting at 6:45, so that the demonstrator has a full 2 hours to deliver their presentation. So, whether you attend via Zoom or in person, please try to join us a little early.

September Membership Meeting

We are planning another hybrid meeting on September 16th at 7:00PM. Hybrid meetings are those where some of the members choose to meet in person at the Fife Community Center and others may log in from home. As of now, the Fife Community Center remains open, with the state required mask mandate. That means that everyone attending at the Fife Center must wear a mask to be in the meeting room.

Eric Lofstrom thin wall demoWhether you come to the September membership meeting in-person or log into the zoom meeting from your own device, our program in September will feature our own Eric Lofstrom. Eric has demonstrated for us several times before. Eric is known for his systematic approach to his work, for his emphasis on body mechanics and tool use. During this session, Eric will be demonstrating how to do a “Square Rimmed Bowl”. During this presentation you will see elements related to proper design principals, pleasing forms, how to make crisp cuts that require little sanding, and layering of interference paints and translucent finishes.
