It is with profound sadness that we share the news that John Jordan passed away Tuesday following an extended illness. John’s life-long contributions to the field of woodturning were foundational and deeply personal to us and everyone who knew him. John has been an integral part of AAW from the beginning and a voice in the original vision for an association of woodturners bound together around the ideals of openly sharing ideas, freely exchanging our methods and techniques, and learning by example. He lived those ideals. He was respected throughout his career and served on the AAW’s Board of Advisors, through which he excelled as a valued source of advice, ideas, and inspiration.

John’s turned and carved vessels are featured in numerous private and corporate collections, as well as the Public Collections of more than thirty museums. In 2012 he was given the honor as a Lifetime AAW Honorary Member. He was one of only two members present at every AAW International Woodturning Symposium.

In this moment, we cannot express with our words the wealth of what John left behind on our hearts. Always one of the first to seek out at an in-person woodturning event, his charm and good-natured sensibilities are legendary. We will miss him dearly. On behalf of the AAW family we express our deepest condolences to John’s family and loved ones in this difficult time.

Fred Abeles, current South Puget Sound Woodturners chapter President, fell on the ice during last month’s ice storm. Fred was admitted to the University of Washington’s Harborview Medical Center ICU with significant head injuries. Ultimately the doctors determined that surgery would not be required, but Fred’s recovery will take a significant amount of time. Fred will need to spend some time in a skilled nursing facility and physical therapy before he will be able to return home. This GoFundMe will help Fred and Donna with the substantial medical expenses to ensure Fred’s recovery.

The AAW will use an enhanced virtual event software platform to offer multiple concurrent live demonstration tracks, panel discussions, special interest topics, a trade show, Instant Gallery, live and silent auctions, drawings, and more. You’ll have opportunities to engage with other attendees face-to-face, plan your sessions, or skip around – you decide. The only thing missing will be the handshakes and hugs from old and new woodturning friends!

The cost of admission is $45 for AAW members and $60 for all others. Even if you’re not able to participate in the complete two-day online experience, registered attendees will have access to recorded replays of featured demonstrations and panel discussions. You’ll be able to watch them on your own time.

The Inland Northwest Woodturners are meeting June 3rd virtually with a demonstration on Skew Skills: Making the Cuts presented by Eric Lofstrom.

The Northwest Woodturners in Beaverton, Oregon are holding their next meeting virtually on June 3rd. Greg Gallegos will be demonstrating podlets.

The Woodturners of Olympia are meeting in person on June 4th in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church of Olympia. This event will be a wood raffle and an opportunity to pay dues, check out library material and buy supplies.

The Portneuf Valley Woodturners in Pocatello, ID, are meeting in-person on June 9th for a BBQ (provided by the club) with social/round table discussion talking about various aspects of woodturning including tips and tricks.

The Seattle Woodturners are meeting virtually on June 10th. Donna Zils Banfield will be demonstrating her Illusions in Wood series.

The Willamette Valley Woodturners in Salem, Oregon will be meeting virtually on June 10th. Eric Lofstrom will be the demonstrator.

The Fraser Valley Woodturning Guild is meeting virtually on June 10th. Kik Peck, VP of the Island Woodturners, is giving her presentation on finishing.

The Northwest Washington Woodturners in Mt. Vernon are meeting virtually on June 17th. Frank Penta will be demonstrating a laminated bowl.

The Cascade Woodturners in Portland, OR are meeting virtually on June 17th. Johnna Klukas will be demonstrating Spaceship Boxes.

The Island Woodturners Guild on Vancouver Island is meeting remotely on June 26th. Carl Jacobsen will be the demonstrator.

AAW Announces Virtual Woodturning Event July 10-12

(St. Paul – June 4) – The American Association of Woodturners (AAW), a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the art and craft of woodturning worldwide, will launch its first-ever three-day online “Virtual Symposium” July 10-12, 2020.

The all-online event will feature live educational woodturning demonstrations, special interest sessions, panel discussions, live auctions, Instant Gallery, prizes drawings for attendees, a virtual trade show, and more.

• Demonstrators for the event will include woodturning pros Trent Bosch, Cindy Drozda, Rudy Lopez, Glenn Lucas, Mike Mahoney, and Craig Timmerman. Topics will be announced.
• Panel discussions will include social media/business, artistic practice, and an Instant Gallery critique.
• Special Interest Sessions will include Gizmos and Gadgets, a presentation of “best of the best” woodturning tips, and a Women in Turning (WIT) presentation.
• Each registered attendee may send an image to include in the Virtual Instant Gallery.
• The cost for all three days of programming is $20.20 (nonrefundable), which includes access to a replay of recorded Virtual Symposium content for up to two weeks following the event.

AAW members can share images of their work on the new AAW website. These images are viewable by the general public and are displayed at random.

To get your photos into the Makers Gallery you first need to update your AAW profile to enable the “Maker” tab on your member profile. Then go to the new Maker tab and complete your Maker Profile. Once this is done you can add an image, along with a title and description.

That’s it! The AAW has provided complete instructions.
