December: Annual Christmas Party for the family

Here are the details:

• Potluck food assignments by last name
o A—I: Main Dish
o J—P: Salad/Side Dish
o Q—Z: Dessert
• Gift Exchange: Does not have to be a turned piece, but exchanging wood turned items is okay. No gag gifts, please. (“My favorite wood turned piece in my home isn’t something I turned.” ~Pat McCart)
• General Raffle Tickets given 1 per membership
• Help tin ticket raffle for prizes. If you have not filled out your ticket for helping this year, please make sure you get your name in the tin.
• Pick up your 2026 meeting schedule.
• Bring your BEST TURNED Piece for 2025 to show. All Skill levels encouraged to bring your best work this year. Item must be started and completed in 2025.
• If you are brand new to turning or are a first year member with the SPSW, we encourage you to come and participate, let me know who you are because we have something just for you.

May President’s Challenge Winner

The May 2024 President’s Challenge Winner is Steve Miner. If you are not familiar with his work in the past, you will surely remember him now. Steve has a love for turning a natural edge bowl; they are a thing of beauty no matterwho you are. His President’s Challenge piece was pulled off the extra turned piece table because he didn’t knowthe details of May’s challenge. With that beautiful crotch with three sides, Steve decided to go out into nature to get some inspiration in his desire to try his hand at carving following Elizabeth Weber’s April Demonstration. He took several images of azalea leaves he liked, used a photo editor and printer to resize the images to fit on each side of the bowl, and then traced the leaves onto the bowl for a cutting guide. If you looked closely, there were three different types of impressions that were carved from three different leaf patterns.

January President’s Challenge Winner

We are so excited to tell you about our January President’s Challenge recipient, Ethan Green. As we have had the pleasure to see some beautiful pieces of art he has brought to our show-and-tell last year, the most memorable to date, the rose root ball vase. In January, the President’s Challenge was a square rimmed bowl. All of the submissions were stunning but there was one bowl that stood out above the rest, a beautifully mastered work of art made from Big Leaf Maple with extraordinary fiddleback with spalting and a gentle curve leading into a bowl. Stunning for the eye, inspired by the works of Richard Raffan, The Art of Turned Bowls and his information about curves; using a catenary curve for his bowl you can see it looks like a bowl in a bowl as the edges gently curve upwards with a bowl in the center with a walnut oil finish.
